What Is Branding?

Branding is about you and you alone. It’s what people say about you when you are not in the room. It’s what they think about you when you least expect it. It’s what causes them to go to sleep with you on their minds when it’s done correctly.

If we allow our minds to go back to the old westerns where the cowboys would take a red hot iron and apply it to the hide of cattle, that would be considered branding.

The brand identifies the owner of the stock or in today’s world the business. Branding also clearly outlines the intent, purpose, direction, and mission of the individual or company along with the core values by which the brand operates.

Branding is a way of distinguishing yourself from competitors and clarifying what it is you offer that makes you the better choice.

So branding can also be viewed as a way of marketing oneself, which has been very confusing for many as it can be so easily mistaken for marketing and there is a difference between the two.

Why Consider Branding?

Branding is important because not only is it what makes a memorable impression on consumers but it allows your customers and clients to know what to expect from your company.

Why Branding Is Necessary

Establishes Authority & Credibility

Your brand presents to the world your values. What you stand for and what people can look forward in expecting to receive from you. It easily establishes authority & credibility.

Outshine The Competition

Branding should give persons the uncontrollable desire to want to align themselves with you & your message. And in the process, see you completely outperforming & eliminating your competition.

You may be wondering what’s the big deal about branding anyway. Why is it so important? First things first. You are your own brand. Everyone has a personal brand.

It is what makes them unique. What is necessary however for people to consider is that one has to develop or build their brand in a way that sets them apart from everyone else.

Personal branding helps you build authenticity, trust, credibility, and connections.

When you get to the section “marketing yourself vs. branding” earlier where I listed what you would need to look at if marketing yourself and then what branding yourself entails you can see that they are almost one and the same.

So branding when done properly helps you carve a name for yourself in society, in the business world, and among your peers.

I especially love it when you only have to smell a whiff of perfume and you can already know who the creator of that unique scent is. It stands out.

You want to be the last words on everyone’s lips when it comes to what your emotions or thoughts your brand brings about in the lives of your targeted followers and fans.

Think of companies like Mary Kay, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Amazon, and so many others. They stand out as do their owners.

Marketing Yourself vs. Branding. Is There Really A Difference?

The following are examples of what you would do if you were looking to start marketing yourself.

Notice what is being called for and is there much difference in what branding requires when compared with the next list of criteria.

I don’t think so. So here’s what is needed in marketing yourself.

Your Offer or what is it that you are bringing to the table. Next, you are setting goals as you would have given yourself a vision of what you want to achieve.

Choosing your target audience follows and while you are there, also set up social media accounts.

Some people at this stage create a website as a website is something that is yours. No one can take that away from you.

Going back to your social media accounts, and even for the about page of your website, write a detailed bio.

For social media, and if into blogging, you can create insightful and engaging content.

Create a schedule around what you do on a daily basis and complete your tasks all the while being active and networking with others in your industry.

You can read the full article here on marketing yourself. But let me get back to the point on branding. Let’s now look at what’s involved with branding yourself.  I should point out though that you would need to define your brand first before you launch into a marketing campaign.

It would just make sense to do that. After all how will you effectively market yourself or your business if you have not established what that business is all about and what message you are desirous of bringing to your potential audience. Though close, branding takes point, then marketing.

Determine your unique value proposition.

Find out how others see you.

Identify your goals.

Identify your target audience.

Recognize your priorities.

Pay attention to details.

Update your resume.

Become a social networker.

Build your own website.

So as you look at these criteria listed here you can see the similarities. What is also important as you look at branding is to go back to your message ever so often to make sure that you are always on track and have not strayed off course.

So as you can see, if you are going to consider owning and running an online or even an offline business or any business for that matter, establishing a brand is of paramount importance.
