I was recently asked by a reader how he can get his first sales. After reading through his question,

I thought it would be helpful to write up a quick post with my thoughts on the topic.

First off, I’d like to say that I think this is an important question for anyone who wants to become a business owner.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a freelance writer, an entrepreneur, or even an agency owner.

I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with clients who are actively selling online.

I’m often asked what my advice is to them on how to get started with their first sales.

This post will be my attempt at answering that question in a simple, straightforward way.

The name of your business is very important. It will be the face of your business and will represent you for years to come.

So make sure it is as good as you can get it.

You need to think about how people will see your business name. Will they see it as a website address? Is it easy to remember?

How does it fit with your brand?

All these things will impact your business in the long run.

 

Getting Your First Sales

 

This is the most important step. You need to have a product that you are sure can sell. This means that you should research what people want.

Find out what they are looking for, what they need, what are their problems, and what makes them happy.

It also means that you need to do market research to know how to price your product.

Do not just go with the lowest price because this will never work. There is always a reason why people are buying something.

So let’s consider what the 5 steps actually are and then we dive into each of them for more clarity and understanding. We have actually mentioned one of them already.

1. Establish A Web Presence

 

For sales in your business, establishing an online presence and thus getting website traffic is a great way to reach more people to boost your brand.

It’s important to remember that in order for your business to get noticed, you need to be seen.

That’s where a website comes in.

But before the website comes in, maybe you might want to visit a couple of forums and see the general convos people are having and offer an opinion.

If your opinion is well received, people may then follow you to learn more and will trace you either through your email if you left one or your website address.

Websites like Quora are great places to offer value when you answer questions or concerns being posed as then based upon your answer people will follow you.

So a website becomes necessary but in my opinion, it is most necessary as you own the rights to whatever happens to your content. That’s a big plus for the content creator.

If you want to start your own online store or business, you will first need to make a website.

This is the platform where you will display your products or services to the world.

By having a professional, search engine optimized website, you can establish yourself as an authority in your industry.

Your website can include any number of pages.

 

The most common pages especially if your website represents a blog would be your home page, your about page, your blog page, and your contact page.

You create a website for your business and then use social media to advertise your company and thus attract more customers.

These customers can then be converted into leads and eventually into sales.

It is here that you need to focus on the quality of your product descriptions, customer service, and ease of use.

Keep it simple

Keep it clean and keep it simple. A website that is too simple may look amateurish, but a website that is too complex is hard to navigate.

You want to focus on giving your visitors the best user experience possible. In this way, they will be encouraged to revisit your site often.

Make It Mobile-friendly

Websites should be responsive, meaning that they will adapt to different screen sizes and devices. If you want your website to be viewed on mobile phones and tablets, make sure it is mobile-friendly.

Again you want the navigation to be smooth and the customer experience crisp and praiseworthy.

All of these factors will eventually lead to sales.

The more comfortable and relaxed your prospects are then the more inclined they will be to provide sales for your business.

Your brand is the image you create in people’s minds. It’s the feeling they have when they think of you or your company.

Your brand is what will get them to remember you, and it is what makes them want to do business with you.

When I think of a mouth-watering roast beef sub sandwich, Subway comes to mind. That’s branding.

The first step to creating a brand is to define who you are and what you stand for.

You must be able to clearly describe what you do, what you offer, and why someone should care about your products and services.

3. Build The Trust Factor With Visitors To Your Website.

 

The trust factor is the number of visitors who stay on your site for a longer period of time and visit more pages of your site.

A visitor is considered trustworthy when he visits your site again in the future.

There are two ways to build the trust factor on your site. You can: Increase the Page Depth (Number of pages visited by a visitor) and Increase the number of visits per day.

Both methods help you build the trust factor of your website.

Increase your conversions by making sure that your contact information is easy to find on your website.

You want to make it as easy as possible for people to reach you by phone or email, which means making sure that all of the information you need to provide is available in a single location.

You need to build up the trust factor, so you need to write content that is helpful, educational, and interesting.

If you are doing this correctly, you have already built a good base of trust with your visitors.

If you want to make a living from home, you have to start as an entrepreneur.

To do that, you need to know what it takes to be successful in the business world.

You also need to look at what problems the market or your niche is facing and come up with a viable solution.

This is how you develop the idea for the product you will eventually create to solve the problems of the market you seek to satisfy.

Is your product or service one that your audience will want to use?

 

 

Make sure you have high-quality content for them to read and share but don’t be too self-promotional in the process.

Also, since there are a lot of products on the market, try to create one that is unique or better than the rest. Get in touch with your current customers.

They’ll be able to help you out if you ask them about what they think of your product or service.

That will help you stand out from the crowd. Don’t just sell products, sell solutions.

You need to create a product that solves a problem that your customers have.

The easiest way to do this is to talk to your customers and find out what their problems are.

Once you have a good idea of what these problems are, make sure that your solution can solve them.

Do this and you will attract customers. The next thing to consider is how much time you want to spend marketing your product.

If you have a limited amount of time, then you need to pick the best strategies.

You can’t do it all at once, so you need to figure out which ones are going to work best for you.

You also need to keep in mind that not every strategy will be effective for every type of product.

There is a lot of talk about how you need to build a reputation for your business before you can get any customers. I’ve heard this a lot.

It’s true, but it’s not a hard truth to learn.

You don’t need to build a reputation. People already know who you are and what you do, so why bother?

The best way however to create a good reputation and make sales, in the long run, is to be transparent and honest.

You just need to stand out from the crowd.

People are constantly looking for something new, so it’s not difficult to gain their attention if you provide them with an innovative product or service.

 

Creating Affiliate Sales For Your Business

 

If you want to become an affiliate, you will need to create a website or blog that is reputable. The more traffic you get to your site, the more reputable it will become.

It is important that the products you promote are related to your niche and that they are a reputable company with a history.

Also, the more relevant the information on your site or blog is to the products you are promoting through affiliate marketing, the more likely people will click on your links.

So these are just some of the ways and things that you can do to create a thriving business that will easily generate sales for you and your brand.

There are many other variables that can be considered but I think enough has been already mentioned for you to get the picture.

All that is left for you to do now is to take action however imperfect it may be and start implementing what you were able to pick up from this blog post.

One more step I want to make mention of as it is an area that gives folks a lot of trouble sometimes. Can you guess what it is?

Closing is a critical step in the sales process.

It’s not about asking for money or closing out the deal.

It’s about delivering the solution and getting the customer to close their mind to the fact that they just bought something.

If you’re new to sales, it can be really challenging to figure out how to close. Some people have an intuitive feel for closing and some don’t.

In my humble opinion, let me say this.

99% of the time the reason we tremble when it comes to closing the sale is that we are not confident in ourselves that we can ask for that sale.

If you have something that easily helps your target market and solves their problems in a jiffy and provides immense value then why would you be afraid to ask for the sale.

You know the pain points of your market and you already pinpointed the solution.

What’s stopping you from sharing that information and grabbing your sale?

Confidence. You need to stop seeing the sale as you begging the prospect to take you up on your offer.

Instead, see yourself as giving them the solution that they came expecting you to help. them with in the first place.
